Over the past half-decade, the American League Central has been one of the more disappointing divisions in baseball. However, the late talent surge has been great to see. Over the past two seasons, the division has had at least two teams qualify for the postseason. 2026 could be another great season for the division, especially with the improvements each team has made this offseason.
The top of the division became one of the most intriguing division races in baseball, with the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians fighting tooth-and-nail through 162. Cleveland would ultimately get the edge; however, they would fall to their division rival, the Detroit Tigers. I expect another great fight for the top spot in the division, which makes the American League more interesting.
Just like my other division previews, I will break down each team’s 2025 season and offseason to paint a picture of what to expect in 2026. Then, I am going to give my prediction on the over or under on their regular-season win line set by FanDuel. I do not endorse gambling, nor are these predictions betting or gambling advice.
Let’s dive in.
*I will be getting my information and team/player research from FanDuel and Sports Reference.
Detroit Tigers – 85.5 Wins
2025 Record – 87-75 (2nd Place in the American League Central)
The Detroit Tigers were a bottom-feeder in baseball for the following years after their franchise stars Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer left for other deals. Detroit has rebuilt its squad and has become one of the best teams in the American League. They clawed their way to the postseason in back-to-back seasons and will look to do so again in 2026.
Tarik Skubal is coming off back-to-back Cy Young seasons; however, is having a difficult time securing a contract from the Detroit Tigers. This will be the main storyline of the season for the team, and if they are struggling, they could deal with the lefty. The rest of the rotation is great, bringing back starters Casey Mize and Jack Flaherty. It has been a long process, but the Detroit Tigers have built a great lineup, headlined by Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter, and Spencer Torkelson. Gleyber Torres and Javier Baez add great sparks throughout the lineup, and Dillon Dingler has become one of the division’s best catchers.
Detroit didn’t change much in its lineup, but the starting rotation received an overhaul. Franchise legend Justin Verlander signed for a farewell tour, but the big signing was Framber Valdez on a three-year contract. Skubal and Valdez at the top of the rotation create one of the most dangerous one-two punches in all of baseball.
When you look at the rest of the division, the case for the Detroit Tigers winning the division is clearly the best. They have improved their starting rotation, have another year of development from their young lineup, and they have a favorable schedule in the American League Central. They have the pitching, the lineup is improving, and the bullpen should be able to compete with any in the American League.
Prediction: Over 85.5 Wins
Kansas City Royals – 82.5 Wins
2025 Record – 82-80 (3rd Place in the American League Central)
Kansas City won the World Series in 2015, and since then, they have been a bottom-feeder in baseball. With the emergence of Bobby Witt Jr., Kansas City has become a solid team in the American League Central. They made the postseason in 2024 and even won a playoff series. Many fans expected another leap in 2025, but Kansas City finished with just 82 wins, missing the postseason.
Kansas City’s lineup is one of the most underrated lineups in all of baseball. Led by Bobby Witt Jr., the rest of the lineup has produced solid, consistent numbers throughout their careers. Vinnie Pasquantino has first base locked down, Jac Caglianone has superstar potential in the MLB, and Maikel Garcia had a breakout year in 2025, earning himself a new, long-term contract. With this young core, the lineup should have no worries improving from 2025. Lefty Cole Ragans was injured for all of 2025, but will be making his return to a rotation that has Seth Lugo, Michael Wacha, and 2025 breakout star Kris Bubic. Kansas City has a solid lineup and starting rotation returning to their team for their run for the division crown.
The offseason was busy for the Kansas City Royals, but they were not making big splashes. Instead, the moves were quiet, affordable, and effective for 2026. Outfielder Isaac Collins and reliever Nick Mears were acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers, adding depth and stability to the lineup and bullpen. All-Star Matt Strahm was acquired as well, giving the bullpen even more strength. Their most recent move was signing veteran Starling Marte to a short-term deal, bringing a veteran presence that could help this young lineup.
I love the Kansas City Royals for 2026. Their offseason was filled with underrated moves to help an already overlooked roster. With a new look bullpen, more depth in the lineup, and starters making their grand return, this team should be a force in the American League Central.
Prediction: Over 82.5 Wins
Cleveland Guardians – 78.5 Wins
2025 Record – 88-74 (1st Place in the American League Central)
Cleveland was able to turn around a mediocre start to the 2025 season into a season where they won the American League Central. However, they would eventually fall to the Detroit Tigers in the postseason. They made the postseason in 2024, making it all the way to the ALCS before falling to the New York Yankees. Cleveland has been a consistently competitive team in the American League, but in recent memory, it has not been able to get over the hump of winning a World Series. Recently, they have become one of the cheapest teams in baseball, and they continue to be stubborn in their ways.
If Cleveland has been good at one thing, they continue to develop and produce great arms. Their starting rotation is highlighted by Tanner Bibbee and Gavin Williams, with Cade Smith locking down the bullpen. The lineup is led by future Hall-of-Famer Jose Ramirez, who is followed by Steven Kwan and Kyle Manzardo. Bo Naylor will get another season as the full-time catcher, but the rest of the lineup is filled with veterans who may or may not fall out of the lineup.
The Cleveland Guardians’ 2026 offseason has been the quietest in all of baseball. The most notable move is Rhys Hoskins agreeing to a minor league deal. Besides this, Cleveland has stayed put, and they are once again trusting the process of their farm system.
I am not a fan of Cleveland heading into the 2026 season. Detroit and Kansas City both improved, becoming better teams than last season. Cleveland has stayed put, meaning they have been surpassed by other teams in the American League Central. I hope they can figure out something, but until then, I am going to take the under on wins.
Prediction: Under 78.5
Minnesota Twins – 72.5 Wins
2025 Record – 70-92 (4th Place in the American League Central)
Minnesota started its rebuild at the trade deadline of the 2025 season, trading away pieces for prospect capital. They finished with the second worst record in the American League Central, and that earned them the No. 3 overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft. They still have solid talent throughout the roster, but for the most part, this could be one of the worst teams in baseball.
Minnesota has some great, high-end talent on its roster. Joe Ryan is one of the league’s best pitchers and will start the season as the most impactful starter on Minnesota’s roster. Byron Buxton has been a Minnesota Twin for twelve years and has continued to play at an All-Star level. Infielders Brooks Lee and Royce Lewis have the potential to be impactful players, but injuries and inconsistent play have held them down. Ryan Jeffers has been one of the best catchers in the American League over the past two years and will look to do so in 2026. One interesting player could be James Outman, as he looks to find the same success that he had in 2023 with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Minnesota was a little busy this offseason, signing veterans that could be shipped around the trade deadline. Josh Bell and Victor Caratini were brought in to help with infield and catching depth, but could be pieces moved at the trade deadline. Taylor Rodgers and Anthony Banda were brought in to help with the bullpen and can be dependable arms throughout 162 games.
I am not excited about the Minnesota Twins, but they could be solid, depending on how their lineup meshes together. The rotation isn’t the worst, but it could be better, the bullpen is questionable, and the lineup has talent, but has lack consistency. I am going to go with my gut and say Minnesota has a similar season to 2025.
Prediction: Under 72.5 Wins
Chicago White Sox – 67.5 Wins
2025 Record – 60-102 (Last Place in the American League Central)
The busiest team in all of baseball this offseason was the Chicago White Sox. After putting out one of the worst teams in baseball the past few seasons, management decided that they would spend some money and sign great talent, along with the young talent already on the roster. The rebuild is a process, but they have the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft. With spending money and developing their young talent, White Sox baseball could be on the come up.
This team is loaded with young talent in its lineup. Kyle Teel, Chase Meidroth, Miguel Vargas, and Colson Montgomery all have shown flashes of being great MLB players. Montgomery might have the highest potential of the group, and while playing the most important position in the field, he could become one of the brightest young stars in all of baseball in 2026. The starting rotation is a work in progress; however, Drew Thorpe and Shane Smith have shown the ability to win games in this league.
Chicago was busy this offseason, signing plenty of veterans, but their biggest signing came from across the world. First baseman Munetaka Murakami shocked the baseball world by signing a two-year deal to play in Chicago. Murakami became one of the best free agents from the NPB and could become the best player on the Chicago White Sox. Outfielder Austin Hays gives Chicago depth in the outfield. The overhaul of the bullpen has been the story, acquiring Jordan Hicks and signing Seranthony Dominguez. With two flame-throwers in the bullpen, Chicago could stay competitive in close games throughout the regular season.
I expect the biggest jump in baseball to come from the Chicago White Sox. With developing young talent, new veteran talent, and a revamped bullpen, Chicago could be a sneaky contender for the American League Central. I do not believe that they are there yet, but they are way better than what their win total is at.
Prediction: Over 67.5 Wins
The American League Central isn’t a flashy division, but they are a competitive, intriguing division. The division is a very talented, young, and I believe that the best is yet to come. Detroit looks to be the dominant team in the American League Central, but the Kansas City Royals could compete for the top of the division. Minnesota and Cleveland do not inspire, but the urgency of the Chicago White Sox does. This division could be one of the most competitive in baseball, even if the talent level is not on par with other divisions.
