It is incredibly difficult to win in the NFL, and the most important part of building a winning team is through the NFL draft. Throughout the NFL’s history, we have seen teams construct dynasties by drafting the perfect roster. The first step to building a great team is finding your franchise quarterback. Most teams will look for that through the draft, and others will find a gem later in their career. The perk of drafting your franchise quarterback is having the quarterback rookie contract window.
The quarterback rookie contract window allows you to have a high-level quarterback at the beginning of their career for significantly less money than what they could be worth. This gives the team the ability to build through free agency and add talent that costs a great deal of money. There are teams in a great position that find themselves in a quarterback rookie contract window, giving them the flexibility to create a stellar roster.
In this article, I will be breaking down teams that have a rookie quarterback who have the flexibility to create a great team through free agency and resign their top talent, before having to pay top dollar for their quarterback. QB Caleb Williams

Caleb Williams was drafted as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Chicago, as well as Williams, struggled in the 2024 season, finishing as one of the worst teams in the NFL. However, the offseason following the 2024 season proved to be arguably the most important offseason in franchise history. Chicago signed offensive genius Ben Johnson to be the next head coach, as well as bringing in a completely new coaching staff. With Williams on a cheap contract, they would spend big time rebuilding the entire offensive line and defense.
Chicago had a great 2025 season, winning their first playoff game in over a decade. Vibes were high heading into the offseason; however, they decided to let a lot of talent walk. Chicago restructured deals, as almost every team did before addressing free agency. They spent money on the defense; however, Chicago still has the flexibility to spend for the next two seasons.
Williams is two years into his rookie contract, and I expect Chicago to extend Williams heading into his fifth season. With this flexibility, Chicago has one of the best situations in the NFL: a young star quarterback and an incredible head coach. Chicago already has a foundation on offense, with tight end Colston Loveland and receivers Rome Odunze and Luther Burden on the outside. They have a great offensive line, and once the defense is figured out, this team could be scary as long as Williams is on his rookie contract.
New England Patriots
QB Drake Maye

Maye was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, following fellow quarterback Caleb Williams. Maye and the New England Patriots had a similar path to the Chicago Bears, having a disastrous 2024 season. However, 2025 was a different story, signing long-time Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel to become their next head coach. They would spend on the defensive line, and with a young roster, New England would soar in 2025.
Vrabel and Maye would help lead the New England Patriots to the Super Bowl, ultimately falling short to the Seattle Seahawks. Like Chicago, New England’s vibes were high heading into the offseason, and they had money to spend during free agency. They would upgrade the offense, bringing receiver Romeo Doubs and guard Alijah Vera-Tucker. New England also spent to upgrade the defense, spending their money wisely this offseason.
New England is in a very similar situation to Chicago. Drake Maye finished 2nd in MVP in 2025, and Mike Vrabel won Coach of the Year. They have a recipe for a successful franchise, and luckily for them, they have the NFL rookie contract window that every team wants. New England has the next couple of years to build on a Super Bowl appearance. With the quarterback rookie contract window, New England has the potential to be great for years to come.
New York Giants
QB Jaxson Dart

Heading into the 2025 NFL Draft, nobody knew what the plan was for the New York Giants heading into draft night. With a “weak” quarterback class, most people expected best-player-available, and that’s what happened with their top-3 selection of Abdul Carter. However, New York was not done yet, and they traded back into the first round to take their franchise quarterback Jaxson Dart. Most people’s expectations were low, but when he was on the field, he shone in 2025.
Even with the success of Jaxson Dart, New York was horrible, and they fired head coach Brian Daboll. They would finish the season as one of the worst in football, but they have made a splash this offseason, bringing in head coach John Harbaugh to lead them. With Harbaugh at the helm, he has started bringing in a new special teams unit, offensive weapons, and defensive depth.
The New York Giants are following the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots blueprint: Let your rookie quarterback’s first season suck, and then find a new head coach while rebuilding your team. It worked for the other two teams, and I expect the New York Giants to make a big jump in 2026. What is really important is that New York has the quarterback rookie contract window, having the next three seasons to construct a winning roster around their cheap, franchise starting quarterback.
I absolutely love what these teams have been doing over the past two seasons. They have drafted quarterbacks and are building capable rosters around them. The best part is they have the flexibility to create these great teams with their quarterback rookie contract window. As long as each team’s quarterback is on a cheap contract, these teams will be able to use the cap space to build potential Super Bowl squads.
